11/16/09 :: 2010 Perennial Plant of the Year ::
The
PPA (Perennial Plant Association) has chosen their Perennial
Plant of the Year for 2010... Baptisia australis. As you may know,
the PPA chooses a perennial plant each year which exhibits
qualities exceeding those of most perennials. Baptisia australis
is one of those plants. This large-scale plant is a native, and is
extremely tough and easy-to-grow. It is perfectly at home in any
garden as a focal point, as a backdrop in a border garden, or in
mass plantings for large areas. Baptisia produces blue-green
foliage and sturdy stalks in late spring and early summer
(May-June in our area) topped by indigo-blue spikes of flowers.
These flowers give way to blackish seed pods that stay attractive
all summer. It grows about 36-48", and spreads/clumps out by
about the the same 36-48". Baptisia australis prefers at
least a half-day of sun or more to flower well. Care-free, showy,
hardy, and unique... Baptisia australis (and most other Baptisia
varieties) are all of these. W.W. plans to again carry the
australis and other varieties of Baptisia for 2010, so keep them
in mind for something different. (You can find past POTY nominations by clicking here,
and you can visit PPA's site by clicking here.)

10/16/08 :: 2009 Perennial Plant of the Year ::
The
PPA (Perennial Plant Association) has chosen their Perennial
Plant of the Year for 2009... Hakonechloa macra 'Aureola'. Tough
to say (hah-kone-ee-kloe'-ah), but easy to understand why it was
chosen. As you may know,
the PPA chooses a perennial plant each year which exhibits
qualities exceeding those of most perennials. This ornamental
grass continues that tradition. This variety of Japanese Forest
Grass can be used in virtually any setting... as a specimen focal
point, in mass plantings, random clumping throughout the garden,
or even in containers. Its graceful arching branches with bright
gold and green variegation resemble bamboo, and displays small tan
"plumes" in late summer (August) and early fall
(September). It grows about 12-18", and spreads slowly to
about 18-24". Hakonechloa macra 'Aureola' does best with at
least some shade during the day, but will tolerate sun if given
enough moisture. Sometimes ornamental grasses do not get their
full respect, but if you're looking for a care-free plant that
provides a perfect color accent and uniqueness to any garden or
container, plan on picking up a few in 2009 as W.W. will have
plenty for you to choose from. (You can find past POTY nominations by clicking here,
and you can visit PPA's site by clicking here.)

2/26/08 :: Keeping the "GREEN" in W.W. Greenhouses ::

You
hear about it everywhere, "green", "Green",
"GREEN"! Everyone seems to be jumping on the
Earth-friendly bandwagon, and to a certain extent, that's a good
thing. Taking responsible care of our planet is what we all have
been called to do. If the changes we make in our habits and uses
are based on facts (instead of marketing, political, and/or other
reasons), it's a very good thing.
However,
at W.W., being "green" is not just something we are
doing because it is currently popular in our society. We have
taken numerous steps throughout the years to be more efficient and
responsible in all aspects of our operation. Some of the steps we
have taken in the past include :
»
Ebb/Flow Benching :: The benches we use in our garden center have
shallow trays in which plants sit in. Water is pumped into these
trays, flooding the entire bench. The plants then "wick"
the water up through the soil in their pots. After a set time, the
water is then drained away to a holding tank where it can be
re-used again. We began using these benches in 1995. Using this
method cuts down on labor costs, water use, and disease (which
keeps our chemical and spraying costs lower).
»
Roof Vents :: In 1997, we installed roof vents in our garden
center. The roof literally opens up when cooling is desired.
Before roof vents, cooling was usually done with large exhaust
fans which used a great deal of electricity compared to using roof
vent assemblies.
»
Energy Curtain :: Also in 1997, we installed an energy curtain in
one of our greenhouse ranges. This "curtain" closes
during desired times to trap heat in the winter months and
evenings. By doing this, less natural gas is used to heat during
the more demanding cooler times. The curtain also can shade the
area in the summer time, keeping it cooler. Plants do not normally
need as much moisture when kept cooler, so water use and
irrigation labor is further reduced.
»
Underground Heat and Efficient Furnaces :: It's a no-brainer to
use the most efficient furnace available if you want to save
energy. But by placing the ductwork of some of our furnaces
underground throughout the greenhouse, we can direct the heat
right under and much closer to the plants. By doing this, less
heat is needed to get the same growing results from the plants. We
have been using this heating method in one of our greenhouse
ranges since 1997, and have updated our furnaces in 2004.
As
in the past, we continue to make "green" improvements.
Some of the steps we have taken recently and will take in the
future include :
»
Re-useable Pots ::
Beginning in 2009, we will be utilizing a specially-made pot
printed exclusively for W.W.. It is a standard plastic pot, but
for each of these pots you take back to W.W. (in good condition,
please!), you will receive 25¢ off your next purchase. Less
plastic in the landfills, our customers receive additional savings
on purchases, and W.W. can then re-use them again for planting or
recycle them...
everyone wins!
»
Earth-friendly Pots :: We are increasing the usage of more
bio-degradable pots. Realistically speaking, our industry still
uses a huge amount of plastic, and will likely continue to do so
for a long time. But using more Earth-friendly pots certainly
helps (and they look cool, too!).
»
Plastic Recycling :: We are always looking for ways to recycle the
plastic film that covers our greenhouses. It is difficult to find
a company that can recycle or use our plastic, but we keep trying.
In addition, a major plastic pot manufacturer is beginning a
recycling program that we are going to be testing out. Stay
tuned...
»
Biological Pest and Disease Control :: We are constantly exploring
new ways to use Earth-friendly methods to control any bugs or
diseases we encounter. Increased use of "good bugs"
(e.g. predatory mites/ladybugs/wasps which feed on bad mites and
aphids) have produced good results in recent years within our
greenhouses. Organic-based
products which control fungus, mildew, and other diseases are also
being tested. These methods of control decrease the use of
sometimes damaging and dangerous chemicals, which is especially
important in a garden center setting.
»
Organic Products :: We offer many organic fertilizer products,
suitable for vegetables, roses, and any other annual or perennial
you have. Try them sometime, you may like them!
»
Paper Bags :: Service is something that has not changed at W.W.,
and we remain one of few garden centers in the area who package up
your plants for you upon checkout (if necessary). During checkout, we are
increasing the use of paper bags to package up your plants instead
of using plastic trays. Sometimes a plastic tray is needed for
strength, but using biodegradable/re-useable bags when possible instead of
plastic is just another way we are helping to reduce landfill
waste and energy use.
Now
you know some of the things W.W. has been doing to be responsible
in our community and world. Come join us at W.W. Greenhouses...

»
2/25/08 :: 2008 Perennial Catalog Announcement ::
In
an effort to reduce costs and keep our prices in check, along with
reducing paper waste, we will not be producing a color perennial
catalog this year. Therefore, our active mailing list customers
will not receive a catalog in the mail as in the past.
However,
we are offering two alternatives to obtain a free perennial
listing :
1) as always, our perennial

revisions happening periodically),
and 2) as usual, we will be sending out a
coupon in April to our active mailing list customers... if you would
like a B/W perennial listing sent to you, simply call
or email us and we will mail you one.
By
doing this, only catalogs will be sent out to those who truly
use/need them, and overall cost and waste will be greatly reduced.
We know this may be disappointing to some of you, as we have
always had good feedback from our catalogs in the past. But costs
have risen dramatically over the years and we did not feel that
charging a fee would be an option. So, we think a simple
black/white listing will satisfy the needs of most, especially
when we have so many color photos available online to view
throughout the season.
We
appreciate your understanding in this decision, and we value your
comments here if you wish. Thank you,
and we look forward to serving you all in 2008!

9/18/07 :: 2008 Perennial Plant of the Year ::
The
PPA (Perennial Plant Association) has chosen the 2008 Perennial
Plant of the Year... Geranium 'Rozanne' PP12175. As you may know,
the PPA chooses a perennial plant each year which exhibits
qualities exceeding those of most perennials. Geranium 'Rozanne'
is no exception, as its long-blooming characteristics and
violet-blue white-eyed flowers make this plant stand out. Blooming
from early summer (June) to early fall (September), it usually
grows 18-24" tall and spreads 36-42" in a neat and tidy
habit. 'Rozanne' does best in sunny areas, but it also does
surprisingly well in shadier areas in our testing... if it gets
2-3 hours of sunlight, it will flower well. Geranium 'Rozanne' is
also very easy to grow, needing no special soil or maintenance,
just an occasional pruning to encourage new blooms and growth if
necessary. W.W. plans to have plenty of Geranium 'Rozanne' for
2008, so give it a try... in your garden or even in containers!
(You can find past POTY nominations by clicking here,
and you can visit PPA's site by clicking here.)

8/1/07 :: August Perennial of the Month ::

easy one for last month, with "jtgrr" being the first to

8/29/07 :: Team W.W./KB Racing at the 2007 Off-Road Derby ::
Team W.W.
and KB Racing returned again to the Off-Road Derby for 2007. Track
conditions were sloppy and wet again this year making traction a
challenge. After getting turned around in the first turn and
blowing a rear tire, the #49 Chevy was in 8th place out of 8 cars.
But, with steady speed and a good running car, the crew made it
back into 3rd place (good enough for advancement). Sadly, during
the last lap the #49 was bumped and turned around, resulting in a
respectable 5th place finish.

Stay
tuned next year as rumors about a new car are circling...

3/1/07 :: January Perennial of the Month ::
Not
as easy as we thought, with many incorrect guesses and only a few
correct ones. "kittykat29" was the first person to
correctly identify our February Perennial of the Month as
Perovskia atriplicifolia, also known as Russian Sage (we would
have taken any Perovskia as the blooms are so similar between the
different varieties). Congratulations, and a new POTM contest is

9/27/06 :: Retail space expansion begun ::
We
have begun work on an expansion to our retail area that should be
ready by the 2007 season. What was once a loading dock area will
now be used for more display area for our outdoor plants. Even
though indoor space is invaluable for a nicer customer shopping
environment, outdoor space is also critical because certain plants
hold up better in outdoor conditions. Look for this new area near
our shade perennial section.
»
9/1/06 :: 2007 Perennial Plant of the Year ::
Once
again, the PPA (Perennial Plant Association) has chosen another
Perennial Plant of the Year, and for 2007, Nepeta x faassenii
'Walker's Low' (Catmint) was named. As you may know, the PPA
chooses a perennial plant each year which exhibits qualities
exceeding those of most perennials. Nepeta f. 'Walker's Low' is
another great example of that, with fragrant gray-green foliage
(cats love it as the name suggests) and lavender-blue blossoms. It
blooms for an extremely long time, beginning in May or June and
continuing throughout the summer... it is still blooming in our
display gardens at this time! It typically grows 24-30" tall
and spreads 30-40" with an even and dense habit. 'Walker's
Low' prefers at least 4-6 hours or more of sun per day, but can
easily tolerate shadier conditions (will just flower slightly
less). No special maintenance is needed aside from pruning back in
the fall when foliage goes dormant after a few hard frosts. If you
need a quick-growing, easy-to-care-for perennial that does well in
almost any location or soil, give Nepeta 'Walker's Low' a try! We
will have plenty on hand for 2007! (You can find past POTY
nominations by clicking here,
and you can visit PPA's site by clicking here.)

8/28/06 :: Team W.W. at the 2006 Off-Road Derby ::
For
2006, Team W.W. acquired a very nice looking Cavalier to replace
the aging Pontiac. However, sloppy track conditions after a steady
rain and some very hard hits made it difficult to advance in the
Hudsonville Fair's Off-Road Derby. A driver-side hit in turn 1 of
lap 1 pushed the #96 car into the tires, and it was downhill from
there. Further front end and steering damage led to a
disappointing 7th place finish. Will Team W.W. be back next year?
Stay tuned!

8/23/06 :: Corner building getting new look ::

years started. We would like to thank all of those who visited us this
season and supported us, and for the opportunity to serve you. We
continually update our website during our "off" months,
so keep checking back for new features, specials, or to ask us a
question or two. Have a great winter, and we will see you in 2006!

In memory, Dale Isenga, 1977 - 2005 ::
Dale
Isenga, a longtime employee of
W.W. for over 10
years, passed away on Friday, October 21, 2005. Dale, son of another longtime employee Ellen,
was a dependable and diligent worker who went about his duties
without complaining, and who quietly and happily did his job to the fullest. Those
of us at W.W. have not only lost a valued employee, but also a friend. Dale
is missed greatly, and our prayers continue to be with his families. †

9/23/05 :: Revisions to website made ::
As
you may have noticed, our News, Contacts, and Location pages have
changed. We have kept the same features, but have changed the
navigation of these pages for faster loading, easier reading, and
a more simple operation. Our News page now only includes current
year info, with a link to another page for previous years...
faster loading. Our Contacts page has phone and email info, but
now links to another page for plant availability and info
requests... easier to read. Our Location page now links separate
pages for maps, routes, and directions... simple. We hope you
continue to enjoy our website, and the continuous improvements we
are making.

9/8/05 :: 2006 Perennial Plant of the Year ::
The
PPA (Perennial Plant Association) has recently chosen 2006's Perennial Plant of
the Year, Dianthus gratianopolitanis 'Firewitch' (Cheddar Pinks). As you may
know, the PPA chooses a perennial plant each year which exhibits qualities
exceeding those of most perennials. Dianthus g. 'Firewitch' is a great
example of that, with fragrant magenta-pink blossoms appearing in
May and June, and repeating again later in the season. The
carpet-like gray-green foliage grows about 6" tall, with
blooms reaching 8-10" tall. Therefore, it stays compact and
keeps its neat and tidy appearance all season. 'Firewitch' prefers
at least 4 hours or more of sun per day, but can certainly
tolerate shadier conditions (will just flower slightly less). When
in bloom, its colorful show is hard to resist, and a quick pruning
of the spent blossoms will enhance the appearance the rest of the
year. We will have plenty of 'Firewitch' on hand for 2006, so plan
on picking some up next year at W.W.! (Previous POTY nominations can be found by
clicking here.)

8/25/05 :: Team W.W. Pontiac in 2005 Off-Road Derby ::
For
the third year, the W.W. Pontiac has come up short at the
Hudsonville Fair's Off-Road Derby. After getting hung up in last
place in turn 1 of lap 1, the #9 car driven by David Brouwer ran
strong and got back into the 3rd position (good enough for
advancement into the semi-finals). But a hard landing in the last
lap caused the car to stall, eventually finishing in the 5th
position, with no advancement. Crew Chief Kevin Brouwer states he
wants a change in cars and is sick of the 1985 Pontiac, so we
shall see what next year brings. Nice try guys!

6/28/05 :: New photos added ::
We
usually update our website with new "What's Blooming"
photos every 7-10 days or so. But with the latest heat wave,
plants blooming in our store and garden center have not lasted as
long as they normally do. Some perennials which usually bloom 6
weeks or more lasted only 3 weeks this year. Due to this, it was
difficult to get some updated photos because with temps
consistently in the 90's, plants never really seemed "in
their prime." No worries, we now have another updated batch
of photos ready for you to view. We hope the temps cool off a
little so that the plants last longer and so that the
photos on our site are representative of what you will find when
you visit W.W.. Click here
to see our display garden photos, and click here
to view our garden center photos. Enjoy!

6/8/05 :: May mailing list prize winner announced ::
For

recently drew a winner, and that person will receive a $100 gift certificate

4/15/05 :: IMPORTANT NOTICE : Incorrect phone number ::
It
has come to our attention that our phone number has been
incorrectly published in some 2005 edition phone books. If you
tried calling this wrong number (616.662.1782), you would have
been greeted by a creepy-sounding computer alarm system. Steps
have now been taken to assure that callers will be connected to
the correct number (616.669.0134). This problem was
out of our control, but we sincerely apologize for any
inconvenience this may have caused.

1/18/05 :: Spam, email, and your requests to us ::
Being
able to communicate via email is an important, efficient, and
convenient tool for us and our customers. However, with the advent
of spam, many email providers and software packages are becoming
more adept at filtering email. This is a good thing. However, one
downside to this is that legitimate email is often filtered out or
never sent properly. So, we are advising all of our customers who
send us email, or submit any sort of requests through our online
forms, to please add our domain (wwgreenhouses.com) to your list
of accepted email senders/domains. This will ensure that our
responses to you are received properly on your end, and you can
continue to experience the top-notch service you have come to
expect from W.W.. Thank you!

1/01/05 :: December Perennial of the Month ::

the new year with another POTM, take your best shot by clicking here.

12/16/04 :: Notice for pop-ups within our site ::
W.W.
has never utilized the annoying practice of pop-up advertising
within our site, causing unwanted windows to appear for
unsuspecting web users. However, we do have various links within
our site which will cause a new window/tab to open up, including
windows for photos, links to other legitimate websites, and for
our online shopping site. This is done so that the original window/tab
can be left open and the user can go back to it without losing
their place. Rest assured any windows that do open up are
legitimate, are not harmful to your computer, and are not in any
way spyware. Thankfully, most newer browser versions have the
ability to block or allow these pop-ups to appear. For best
functionality within wwgreenhouses.com, simply set your browser to
always accept pop-ups from W.W.. This will give you full access to
our site, while still maintaining online security for your usual
web browsing activities.

11/29/04 :: W.W. launches online shopping ::
W.W.
is now offering online shopping! After many seasons of talking
about it, we finally did it. We are getting started with just a
few varieties and one size pot, but we plan to expand as much as
we can in the coming seasons. Most of the work has been done
in-house to keep costs down for our customers, and we feel it will
be an excellent extension of our Hudsonville garden center.
This
will never replace our local Hudsonville store and the reputation
we have built there. However, it will ::

8/27/04 :: 2005 Perennial Plant of the Year ::
The
PPA (Perennial Plant Association) chooses each year their Perennial Plant of
the Year. For 2005, Helleborus x hybridus (Hellebore, Lenten Rose) has been
chosen. As you may
know, the PPA chooses a perennial plant each year which exhibits qualities
exceeding those of most perennials. Helleborus x hybridus blooms in March or
April in our area, which makes it unique given our winter and spring climate.
Not many plants bloom during that time! Most Helleborus grow about 15-20"
tall, and feature nodding single and sometimes doubled flowers. There are
numerous species and cultivars recently introduced, with many colors including
pastel pinks and rose, maroons, chartreuse greens, light yellows, and white.
An added feature is that once established, Helleborus become very easy to
grow, are quite drought tolerant, and do not require any particular soil. Just
be sure to plant them in a shaded or partially shaded area. We at W.W.
are in the process of choosing the very best Helleborus varieties for
availability in 2005, so check back and see what you can do with the newest
Perennial Plant of the Year! (Previous POTY nominations can be found by

8/26/04 :: Team W.W. Pontiac in Off-Road Derby ::
After
a disappointing race last year, the W.W. Pontiac made some
improvement at this year's Off-Road Derby. Driver David Brouwer
coaxed the #41 car to a 3rd place finish in his first heat,
advancing to the semi-finals. In the semi-finals, it became
apparent that the car was starting to run hot, and power was
lost... ending in a 5th place finish with no further advancement.
Much better results from last year, but crew chief Kevin Brouwer
is already thinking about changes in setup for next year. Good job
guys! [ PICTURES NO LONGER AVAILABLE ]

4/19/04 :: Spring Opening 2004 ::
2004
is off to an excellent beginning! We had temps in the 70's for the first time
in 7 years for our Spring Opening, and many new faces along with all of our
regulars were present. Thank you to those faithful customers who again came
out to join us, and congratulations in advance to our prize winners (who will
be announced at a later time). Take a look at the pictures below from our
Spring Opening, a new window/tab will appear for you [ PICTURES NO LONGER AVAILABLE ]

4/10/04 :: New survey page added ::
In
an effort to gain more knowledge about what our customers want, we have added
a survey page to our website. This page will contain a quick one-question
survey that will help us in fine-tuning our business to your desires. Don't
worry, it is only one question, it will take very little time to answer, and
it does not ask for or collect any personal information. Give us your thoughts
by clicking here, and thank you for your
participation!

4/1/04 :: March Perennial of the Month ::
We
have another POTM winner for March, "Lori4698." Congratulations to
her for being the first to correctly name March's Perennial of the Month as Gaura
lindheimeri 'Siskiyou Pink.' "Lori4698" will receive an email on how
to receive her gift certificate, and the rest of you may try again by clicking
here. Good luck!

annual Spring Opening. As you may know, it is planned for April 16 & 17,
and we will be open on Friday 9-8, and on Saturday 9-5. You can receive 10%
off your entire purchase (excluding bulk soil, bark, and stone) on these 2 days, along with a chance to win various

starting to get them sent out. If you are not currently on our mailing list,

3/3/04 :: 2004 Perennial Catalogs ready to be printed ::
We
have completed our 2004 Perennial Catalog and we plan to send them out in the
next week or two. We have made a few changes this year, including grouping the
new items together, and eliminating some minor information from the rest of
the items which will save space.
»
3/1/04 :: February Perennial of the Month ::
Congratulations
go to "judy.ward" for successfully naming our February POTM. The
correct name was Anchusa capensis 'Blue Angel.' "judy.ward" will

»
2/1/04 :: January Perennial of the Month ::
We
had a few guesses that were very close, but not closer than the entry by
"ra4folk." He/she had the most accurate guess of our January POTM as it was Cimicifuga racemosa 'Hillside Black Beauty'
PP09988.
"ra4folk" will be contacted via email to claim his/her $20 gift
certificate. Our new POTM for February is now online, and you can make your
guess by clicking here!
»
1/1/04 :: December Perennial of the Month ::
After
3 months, nobody could correctly guess our Perennial of the Month. We had a
few close calls, but the correct name is Salvia argentea. A new POTM has
been put online again, with the prize going back down to the usual $20.
Start the new year out right by making a guess and winning! Click here!

12/1/03 :: November Perennial of the Month ::

»
11/20/03 :: W.W. closed for the season ::
We
are now closed for the season, but we are already making plans for next
year. We will be re-opening again next April, and we look forward to another
year of serving you. We also would like to thank each one of you who visited
us this year and for your patronage. You again have made W.W. Greenhouses,
Inc. one of the premier places to find new and interesting perennials and
annuals, with service to match. Thank you!
»
11/1/03 :: October Perennial of the Month ::
Nobody
was able to correctly identify the October Perennial of the Month. So, we
will keep it up for another month, with the gift certificate amount doubling
from $20 to $40. Click here to give it a try!
»
10/1/03 :: September Perennial of the Month ::
It
was an easy one to guess last month, at least for some. We received numerous
correct entries, but "judyv1" was the first one to name our
September POTM as Euphorbia myrsinites. "judyv1" will be contacted
via email to receive the $20 gift certificate prize. October's contest is
now underway, click here to make your guess!
»
9/18/03 :: 2004 Perennial Plant of the Year ::
The
Perennial Plant Association has chosen Athyrium nipponicum 'Pictum'
(Japanese Painted Fern) as the 2004 Perennial Plant of the Year. As you may
know, the PPA chooses a perennial plant each year which exhibits qualities
exceeding those of most perennials. (You can see all of the past and present
Plants of the Year by clicking here.)
Athyrium nipponicum 'Pictum' is a hardy fern which grows 12-20", and
about 15-20" wide. Its fronds feature silvery-gray overlays giving it a
metallic appearance, with contrasting burgundy veins. It is easy to grow,
has a vigorous but tidy growing habit, and can be used in a variety of ways
as long as it gets at least some light shade. Grown with Heuchera or Hosta,
it becomes an exceptional specimen in any yard or garden.
»
9/9/03 :: New Plant Problem page added ::
As
mentioned about a month ago, we have added a new section to our website
(with more on the way). This new page is a Plant Problem FAQ page, and it
can be accessed through our normal menu options at the top left of your screen.
It contains photos of common problems that gardeners may encounter,
descriptions of each, what to look for, and how to cure or prevent these
problems. We think it will be yet another useful tool our website offers,
and we hope it can answer a few questions that some of you may have. More
problem areas and photos will be added in the near future, but you can see
what it looks like now by clicking here.
Enjoy!
»
9/1/03 :: August Perennial of the Month ::
A
few more entries were submitted to our 3 month old Perennial of the Month
contest picture, but no one has yet to answer it correctly. So, since we
finally stumped you all, we will be starting a new contest and going back to
the $20 prize. By the way, the correct identification was Symphytum
grandfilorum (Comfrey). Our September POTM is now online, and is probably a
little easier this month. You can check it out by clicking here.
Good luck!

8/27/03 :: Team W.W. Pontiac in Off-Road Derby ::
W.W.
sponsored a car in this year's Hudsonville Fair's Off-Road Derby.
High hopes were dashed when the #141 car driven by David Brouwer
had endless stalling problems causing a 6th place finish out of 7.
Crew chief Kevin Brouwer blames the problems to carb issues and
exhaust pressure, and the 1985 Pontiac 6000 will be completely
reworked for next year. A nice try for their first attempt. [ PICTURES NO LONGER AVAILABLE ]

8/15/03 :: New website links ::
We
have just introduced a cooperative effort with Walters Gardens, Inc.
(Zeeland, MI) to offer two new websites for gardeners. These new websites
are Perennial Resource and
Designer Daylily. Perennial Resource is a website
offering pictures, planting guides and designs, general information
concerning perennials, and so much more. It will prove to be a very useful
tool for any gardener wishing to learn more about perennial plants, looking
for advice, or simply to browse. Likewise, Designer Daylily is a website
dealing with the very best of the best daylily varieties. It is a great way
to see all the proven varieties firsthand, keep up on the new varieties just
released, and view photos of 'the' staple in any perennial garden... the
daylily. We hope these sites will assist and entertain you. We welcome any
comments you may have, contact us by clicking here.
»
8/14/03 :: Coming additions to our website ::
We
will likely be adding a few new sections to our website in the coming
months. A section for plant problems and pests is possible including
pictures and solutions, along with another section for customer photographs
of W.W. plants in their yards. We are also going to be adding a few links to
some other websites that you will probably find useful. Look for those on
our home page. As always, if you have any suggestions or problems with our
website, please contact us here.
Keep checking back, we are always trying to make W.W. Greenhouses online
more useful and enjoyable for all of our guests.
»
8/1/03 :: July Perennial of the Month ::
Many
more entries were submitted for our Perennial of the Month Contest, but
nobody had a correct answer again this month. The current POTM will be held
over for one more month (with the gift certificate prize rising to $50),
after which, we will have to put up a new one. Is it possible that we may
have stumped you all? Try again by clicking here!
»
7/28/03 :: Email and our goals ::
It
has become commonplace in this internet age for communication through email.
While email has its definite advantages, it certainly has its disadvantages.
One major disadvantage is the lack of or delay in receiving a response. We
see this repeatedly, even within our industry and our competitors. We want
our customers to know that their email requests are read and responded to as
soon as possible in the most complete way, most times within an hour!
(Exceptions would be the rare occasion of our server not working, or an
email sent to us during off-hours, which we will respond to the next working
day.) This is our goal, and we think our customers benefit greatly from
email communication. We hope you have had a good experience dealing with
W.W. in this way!
»
7/17/03 :: OFA Short Course ::
On
July 14 we made a trip to Columbus for the very popular Ohio Florist
Association Short Course. The Short Course is a huge gathering of industry
growers and suppliers. We would estimate a 65% representation for annuals,
and 35% representation for perennials. There are numerous learning sessions
offered, as well as a large trade show. By visiting the Short Course, we
were able to get a jump on next year's new and in-demand plant varieties,
and also check out some new ways of selling and displaying our plants. We
believe our customers will benefit greatly from the trends and plant
varieties we see becoming available.
»
7/10/03 :: Mums are in ::
We
have just started to put some of our 4½" hardy mums into our store,
with many more sizes on the way in the next few weeks. Prices for our
4½" mums are $2.99 or 4 for $10, and prices for our larger sizes have
not yet been set but will range from around $4-9. Virtually any color will
be available as well. Keep us in mind for your fall mums!
»
7/1/03 :: June Perennial of the Month ::
We
received numerous responses to our current POTM, but there was no correct
entries last month. So, we are holding over our June POTM for July, with the
prize now doubled to a $40 gift certificate. See if you can guess what it is
by clicking here!
»
6/24/03 :: New property purchased ::
We
have recently acquired a piece of property about 2 miles from our
Hudsonville store. We plan to begin building a few greenhouses at that site
this fall. These greenhouses will enable us to cut back on the amount of
rent we currently pay for greenhouse space, they will be new and much more
efficient, they are closer to our retail store as compared to the ones we
currently rent, and they will be tailored to growing retail-specific plants.
This means better quality for our customers, and a more efficient growing
process for us. Excavation has already begun, and we are excited to begin
building soon.
»
6/4/03 :: 1 millionth perennial sold ::
You
have no doubt heard about or taken part in our Great Wolf Lodge giveaway
this past May. This was in celebration of 1 million perennials sold since
W.W. Greenhouses began. We are not exactly sure what day the actual 1
millionth perennial was sold, but we know it was sometime in April or May.
This is quite an accomplishment, considering we started out with a just few
roadside wagons back in 1985. We would like to think our quality and service
are reasons for this milestone, but we know it would not be possible without
our loyal customers support throughout the years. A sincere thanks to all of
those who shop and continue to shop at W.W., and may the next 1 million
perennials be better than the last!

to claim the $20 gift certificate. This month's new POTM is currently
online, click here to make a guess!

5/1/03 :: New website look and feel ::
If
you are a new visitor to our website, we welcome you. If you are a regular
visitor of our website, you have now noticed the new appearance and function
of our website. As you may know, we do our website development in-house, and
it has been a work-in-progress. Our fourth revision should speed up the
download time for you, improve the functionality and navigation throughout the
site, allow our Netscape users to finally see it the way it was supposed to be
seen, and allow Internet Explorer users a consistent appearance regardless of
their screen resolution. We hope you enjoy the improvements, and we hope you
continue to use our website as an extension of our retail store. As always,
please excuse any bugs or glitches you may find, as we are always trying to
improve on it. If you have any comments (both positive or negative), or any
suggestions for our website, please contact us by clicking here.
Enjoy!

5/1/03 :: April Perennial of the Month ::
We
had numerous entries this month for our contest, so it must not have
been too difficult. Our April Perennial of the Month was Clematis
terniflora, and it was correctly identified first by "mcatoz."
Congratulations! Our next POTM contest is online, check it out here.

4/28/03 :: Ann taking a break this year ::
Since
the beginning of W.W., Ann Brouwer has helped countless customers
with their gardening needs, assisted in choosing plants for their
custom containers, arranged and planted all of our custom
containers, and did it all with a smile and a patient attitude. Her
talents, personality, dependability, and willingness to go the extra
mile were always a very valuable asset to W.W., and she will be
missed greatly. In fact, we have already had many customers ask this
year, "Is Ann working?" Ann will be taking a break from
W.W. to take on other interests this season. We wish her well, and
we thank her for all of her dedicated work throughout the years.

4/1/03 :: Perennial catalogs sent out ::
We are a little late this year in sending out our perennial catalogs, but
we included some color photos this year which took more time at the printers. If you received a catalog last year or signed up
since then, you should be receiving one within a week. If you are not on our mailing list and would like to be included in
future mailings, click here to contact us.

4/1/03 :: Catalog misprint ::
In our 2003 Perennial Catalog, there is a misprint on the inside cover. It
reads: "We will again be offering 1,000 different perennial varieties never carried before at W.W." It SHOULD read as
follows: "We will again be offering over 1,000 different perennial varieties this year, including over 180 new varieties
never carried before at W.W." We apologize for the confusion.

3/1/03 :: February Perennial of the Month ::

test your knowledge by clicking here!
»
2/6/03 :: Retail help needed ::
W.W. is starting to think about our employee needs for 2003, and we would
like to invite anyone to stop by and fill out an application. We are looking for seasonal help throughout the months of April,
May or June, and tasks might include helping customers, answering questions, re-stocking, cleaning, and checkout. We are also
looking for a person to assist customers in arranging and planting their own custom planters and containers. More details about
this and any other position can be explained by Doug when you stop by. If you have any questions, please contact us by clicking
here.
»
2/4/03 :: New shade structure ::
We
have completed the assembly of a new shade structure located on the east side of our retail showroom. Although our customers
value our indoor showroom (where it is warm in the spring, and dry when it is raining), we still need outdoor areas for certain
plants. This new area will benefit cool-loving plants by allowing cooler temperatures to aid in slow, stable growth, yet still
provide protection from wind and frost. All we need to do is put the shade cloth on in the spring, and it should be ready to go!
»
2/1/03 :: January Perennial of the Month ::
For the second consecutive month nobody correctly identified our
POTM, so
we're going to run it again this month. Since there were no winners again this time around, our gift certificate amount will now
jump to $30 instead of $20. Try again here!
»
1/2/03 :: Website maintenance ::
We do our website design on our own, so we're constantly trying to make
improvements. To that end, we are still told there are problems when viewing our website, and not just in Netscape as was
previously reported. We will most likely be changing some software here which will help in making our website viewable and
beneficial to all of our users. In the meantime, please be patient with any errors you may receive, and God bless you all in
this new year!
»
1/1/03 :: December Perennial of the Month ::
Nobody correctly identified December's POTM so we are running it for
another month. And, since there were no winners last month, our gift certificate amount will jump to $20 instead of $10. Try
again here!
»
12/2/02 :: November Perennial of the Month ::
Our November Perennial of the Month was Brunnera macrophylla
'Variegata',

gift certificate. Congratulations! Our last POTM for the year is online, and you can check it out

11/13/02 :: W.W. closed for the season ::

for next year, and more. Please check back!

10/31/02 :: October
Perennial of the Month ::
We've
rounded up another Perennial of the Month, and October's POTM was easy. It
was Digitalis (Foxglove), and the variety in the picture was 'Giant
Shirley.' The first person to correctly identify it was "upacreek,"
and he/she will be contacted via email to claim the gift certificate. Our
November POTM is now online, so check it out here!

10/3/02 :: What's

7/15/02 :: 2003 Perennial
Plant of the Year named ::
At this year's 2002 Perennial Plant
Association Symposium held in Chicago,
Leucanthemum 'Becky' was announced to be the association’s 2003 Perennial
Plant of the Year. This yearly award is presented to a variety of perennials
whose appearance, habit, color, and hardiness are of the utmost quality when
compared to others. The perennial could be an old favorite or a new
introduction, but it is always a sign that the plant should be considered
for any garden. Leucanthemum 'Becky' has to be one of the very best
Shasta-type daisies available. It features stiff and sturdy stems that don't
flop over like other daisies, large traditional white flowers with yellow
centers, and a robust growing habit with repeat blooming later in the
season. It is best grown in at least 4-5 hours of sunlight or more, grows to
about 36-40", and blooms from July-September. It is becoming an
increasingly popular plant and we still have some left at W.W. for your yard
or garden! Try one!

6/30/02 :: June Perennial
of the Month ::
Our
June Perennial of the Month was Epimedium alpinum 'Rubrum.' Although there
were many incorrect entries, we had a last minute entry by "Tschanzenb,"
and he/she was close enough to win this month's POTM. We thank those who
participated, and our July POTM is now online. Check it out here!
»
6/18/02 :: Still busy at W.W. ::
Even
though it is after Memorial Day, the traditional busy time for seasonal
planting, we are still going strong here at W.W. We are still offering fresh
annuals and re-stocking perennials on a daily basis. If you think the season
is over, think again! Come see what W.W. has to offer!

6/5/02 :: Virus from
W.W.?
Recently,
there have been a number of email worms being spread, probably more in the
last few months than ever before. It has come to our attention that a virus
or email worm has been sent to numerous people from our
"availability" email address. We want to assure everyone that this
is not the case. Many email worms can mask the "From" field and
make it look like the email came from someone you have dealt with, when in
fact, it never did. We scan our system regularly, and we are indeed free
from any viruses. If you have received email from any W.W. address that has
been detected as a virus, please realize it did not come from us. (You may
inform us if you wish, just to be sure.) And most importantly, keep your
anti-virus programs current, and scan regularly!

5/31/02 :: May Perennial
of the Month ::
Our
May Perennial of the Month was Iberis sempervirens (Candytuft). We had many
correct answers this month, but we fooled quite a few of you, too. The first
person to answer correctly was "dawns," and he/she will be
contacted via email for his/her gift certificate. Our June POTM is ready to
go, and this month it might not be so easy. Check it out here!

5/22/02 :: Special
Memorial Day hours ::
We
will be open 9am-5pm on Monday, May 27. This is in response to many requests by our customers, as
we have not had the best weather conditions so far this year for planting.
As always, we sincerely honor all of those who have served for our country,
and we hope everyone has a great holiday weekend.

5/11/02 :: Unseasonable weather not keeping customers away ::

we are just getting started. Some of the nicest and widest plant selections
are available this time of year, so visit us soon to make sure you get what
you want! Here are some pictures of this past weekend :: [ PICTURES NO LONGER AVAILABLE ]

2/28/02 :: Postcard results ::
Thank
you once again to those on our mailing list who responded. We finally have
all the postcard information recorded, and here are some of the interesting
results ::
»
Nearly
48% of the cards sent out were returned.
»
Another
27% were returned as undeliverable. This is a good thing as it eliminates
all those who have moved since the last update, and it saves us (and you)
the cost of printing and mailing out material to those erroneous addresses.
»
When
asked how much you would spend compared to last year, 7% said less than last
season, 27% said more than last season, and 57% said the same as last
season.
»
When
asked how many times you visit W.W. during the season, 11% said only once,
47% said 2-3 times, and 35% said 4 or more times. Wow!
»
1/17/02 :: Postcards
coming in ::
The
postcards which we sent out to update our records and garner feedback are
pouring in! Thank you to all of you who have responded. We are currently
putting together our perennial catalog and should be sending those out as
usual sometime in late February or early March.
»
2/3/02 :: Mailing list updates ::
Every
few years we try to update our mailing list so that our records can be kept
current and accurate. We will once again be doing this in the next few weeks
by way of a postcard we will send to you. We ask that you send it back to us
(no postage necessary) and if you wish, you may also answer a few short
questions on the card. Returning the card and answering the questions will
ensure that you will continue to receive our perennial catalogs and any
other special offers, and it will help us serve you better. Thank you for
your participation!

12/7/01 :: Website
revision complete ::
We
have once again tried to improve the look and function of our website. As
you may have noticed, not too much has been updated since October, but we
are now back online and updating regularly. We hope you will notice the
improvements in speed, appearance, and content. We also hope you bear with
us as there still may be some bugs to work out (we do our own website
design). If you'd like, please contact us by clicking here
with any suggestions or problems you may have with our website. Enjoy!

12/1/01 :: Gift

Contact us by clicking here, or stop by
to purchase one for any amount. We honor personal checks, Visa, MasterCard,
and Discover for
your convenience. And of course, we at W.W. wish all of you a wonderful
holiday season!

10/31/01 :: W.W. closed
for the season ::
It
is that time of the year again when we must close our doors until next
spring. The weather is still quite warm, but our stock is nearly gone and it
is time to focus on next year. We thank all of our customers who have
visited us and supported us this year, and we look forward to serving you
next April when open up again. Please feel free to email us or visit our
website as usual.
»
10/23/01 :: Website maintenance ::
We
will be upgrading the look, appearance, performance, and features of our
website in the next several weeks. Therefore, some pages will not be updated
regularly, but since it is our "off-season," we feel this will not
greatly interfere with your online experience with us. If you have any
questions at all, please contact us by clicking here.
»
9/27/01 :: W.W. purchases
adjoining property ::
A
parcel of property directly to the south of W.W. has been purchased. A house
and a few other buildings remain on the site. This new property should give
us the ability to expand with some more greenhouse space and better traffic
flow in the future should we need it.

9/18/01 :: 2002 Perennial
of the Year named ::
At the 2001 Perennial Plant
Association Symposium held in Washington D.C.,
it was announced that Phlox paniculata 'David' is to be the association’s
2002 Perennial Plant of the Year. This yearly award is presented to a
variety of perennials whose appearance, habit, color, and hardiness are of
the utmost quality when compared to others. The perennial could be an old
favorite or a new introduction, but it is always a sign that the plant
should be considered for any garden. Phlox p. 'David' is one of the nicest
white tall phlox varieties available, with very good mildew resistance,
repeat blooming later in the season, and stunning pure white flower heads.
It can be grown in sun or partial shade, reaches a height of 36-40",
and blooms from July-September. Many have already found out what a nice
plant it can be for any yard or garden... keep it in mind for next year when
shopping at W.W.!
»
9/14/01 :: Reflection ::
Consider
reading Psalm 46 from the Bible, not only due to this week's recent events,
but as a constant reminder.
»
9/7/01 :: July website
winners awarded ::
During
July, we ran a drawing for those who visited our website. Several $10 gift
certificates were awarded to those who submitted to us why they love
shopping at W.W. Greenhouses. These submissions might even make it into some
of our advertising next year! Congratulations to those who won and thank you
to everyone who participated!
»
9/28/01 :: New display gardens ::
We
have begun work on a few more display garden areas. If you have visited us
before, you know that we have quite an extensive collection of plants in our
existing display gardens. This is a valuable tool for our customers as they
can see various plants in their mature appearance, see actual colors, and
obtain ideas on what they could put in their own yards. Since acquiring a
corner piece of adjoining property, we have worked to create an area for
additional display gardens which is what we are presently working on. We
hope to begin adding plants by next spring.
»
7/17/01 :: Good results
from Ohio Short Course ::
On
July 16, we had the opportunity to visit the Ohio Short Course in Columbus, Ohio.
The Short Course is a large gathering of all the top names in the
greenhouse, garden center, and grower industry. Much information was
collected from the huge trade show, and we hope to introduce many new items
and ideas for next year. We were also able to talk with many fellow growers
and suppliers to gain valuable insight into what we can do to make next year
at W.W. the best ever!
»
7/12/01 :: Still going strong ::
If
you think that the season is done already or that you're too late to plant,
think again! We still have some very nice annuals to choose from to fill in
those bare spots, and of course, we re-stock our perennials all summer long.
New perennials arrive almost daily including large potted grasses and
field-grown perennials. Our plants are still fresh and healthy, so stop in
and see what we have to offer!
»
6/2/01 :: Need a cure
for those rainy-day blues?
It
was certainly a wet and somewhat dreary May this season, with rain and
clouds seemingly the norm. But at W.W., it has been warm and bright! It is
always difficult to keep plants looking healthy with cold temps and dark
days, but we still have a great selection of hanging baskets, young and
fresh annuals, and perennials which we re-stock daily. Stop
by sometime soon... we believe you will not be disappointed.
»
5/31/01 :: Website revisions ::
It
is always a struggle to offer an interesting and visually pleasing site and
still make it load quickly, as more graphics and detail means more time
needed to load. We have made a few changes, so the site should load quicker
for you. However, we still want to offer the same content, so don't expect
too much. We hope to make some major revisions in the off-season which
should further enhance the performance of the site. Stay tuned! If you have
any suggestions, please click here
to contact us. Thanks!

5/19/01 :: Special
Memorial Day Hours ::
We
respect our veterans and offer our honor to them, but we also would like to
please our customers by being available for their shopping needs. Therefore,
W.W. Greenhouses will be open for business on Memorial Day from 9am-3pm.
»
5/19/01 :: Spring fever
still going on ::
Our
flowers are selling quickly, but we still maintain an excellent selection of
bedding plants and hanging baskets, a selection that is hard to find
elsewhere. And as always, new perennials are re-stocked almost daily. So,
stop by and see what W.W. has to offer!

4/2/01 :: Still Busy ::
Spring
Break? Not a chance. Who needs sun and 80 degrees when you have this? Things
are starting to take shape at W.W., and although there isn't much color yet,
we're hard at work getting ready for our Spring Opening on April 13-14. Take
a closer look at what we've been up to :: [ PICTURES NO LONGER AVAILABLE ]

5/5/01 :: Tentative
Spring Opening Announced ::
We
are tentatively planning our spring opening for Friday and Saturday, April
13 and 14. If all goes as planned, we will be ready to kick off another year
of serving our customers. We don't foresee any difficulties in being ready
by the 13th, but it takes a lot of work to be ready, so you may want to keep
checking our site for updates. As in the past, we will be offering 10% off
your entire purchase during our opening, both Friday and Saturday. See you
then!
»
5/1/01 :: Perennial
Catalog Ready For Printing ::
Our
yearly perennial catalog which lists most of the perennials which we will be
carrying has finally been sent to the printers. If you are on our mailing
list, you should receive it in the next few weeks. If you are not on our
mailing list, click here to contact us.
»
1/18/01 :: Website Refined ::
As
with anything new, there are bound to be a few glitches. Such was the case
with our website. Our first launch wasn’t bad, but it was obvious some
revisions needed to be done. We hope the latest version will solve some of
the viewing problems users had, and offer a more professional look. However,
we will always be trying to improve on it, and of course, some pages are not
complete as of this writing, due to the fact that our store is closed.
Again, if you have any feedback concerning our site, please contact us by
clicking here.

12/1/00 :: Gift
Certificate Reminder ::
We
are closing in on another holiday season, and W.W. gift certificates make a
great gift to that gardener or homeowner on your list. Click here
to contact us, or stop in to purchase a gift certificate for any amount you
wish. Merry Christmas to you all, and we hope you have a wonderful holiday
season!

11/3/00 :: W.W. Closes
for the Season ::
With
colder weather moving in, we have closed our doors until next April. Most of
our stock is gone, and it is getting late to plant. (Make sure to mulch
those perennials which are a bit more tender!) We have had a good year, and
we thank all our customers for their patronage. We will continue to update
our website and receive email, so please feel free to keep visiting us
online. See you next Spring!
»
11/1/00 :: Launch of W.W.
Greenhouses Online ::
It
took some time, but W.W. Greenhouses is finally online. If you are reading
this, you obviously have found us. We have talked numerous times in the past
about putting up a website, but found that if we wanted to do it, we wanted
to do it right. Lack of time has kept us from doing anything until now, but
hopefully it was worth the wait. We are proud to be part of the internet
revolution, and we worked hard to produce a useful and informational website
to better help our customers, and promote ourselves to potentially new
customers. All the design work was done in-house, and it is our first
attempt. So, please excuse any mistakes and empty pages you may find, and
realize that we will be continually trying to improve this site. We invite
you to spend some time to browse our site, and we look forward to serving
you both at our garden center and in cyberspace. If you have any feedback
concerning our website, please click here
to contact us.

8/1/00 :: 2001 Perennial
of the Year named ::
At
this year’s Perennial Plant Association Symposium held in Toronto,
Ontario,
it was announced that the ornamental grass Calamagrostis ‘Karl Foerster’
is to be the association’s 2001 Perennial Plant of the Year. This yearly
award is presented to a variety of perennials whose appearance, habit,
color, and hardiness are of the utmost quality when compared to others. The perennial could be an old favorite or a new introduction, but it is always a
sign that the plant should be considered for any garden. Calamagrostis
‘Karl Foerster’ is named after the famous botanist Karl Foerster, who
introduced it to the public in 1950. It offers straight green leaf blades up
to 3 feet, with wheat-like plumes appearing in July reaching up to 4½ feet.
Foliage and plumes stay very nice throughout the year, including winter
months. It clumps out to about 3 feet, needs at least 4-6 hours of direct
sunlight or more, and is easily grown. We at W.W. have many to choose from
depending on price and size. Stop in and we’ll help you decide where your
Calamagrostis can be planted in your yard! Or, contact us by clicking here
for more information.

7/22/00 :: W.W.
Greenhouses Installs New Sign ::
After
constantly revamping our display gardens, it was becoming more evident that
our roadside sign would need to be replaced. In service since 1990, our old
sign was made mostly of wood, and it was shedding its paint and rotting out
quite badly. A new lighted sign replaced the old one, giving our retail
store a more professional and functional look. [ PICTURE NO LONGER

July,
2000 :: W.W. Purchases Adjacent Corner Lot ::
As
of July, W.W. Greenhouses will own an adjacent piece of property previously
used by West Michigan Mechanical, a heating and cooling business. An
abandoned house on the property was dismantled (by intentional fire) along
with a garage, and a parking lot was installed. Parking has always been
somewhat of a problem at W.W. on those busy May days, and this should
definitely improve our customers' shopping experience. An extra
entrance/exit has also been added to 40th
Avenue to help traffic flow. In the future, we hope to put in a few more display
gardens surrounding the parking lot. We believe this entire area will
dramatically improve the appearance, convenience, and exposure of our retail
store.
